Several US military aircraft were damaged during an overnight Iranian missile attack on an American air base in Jordan, according to a CBS report, adding to the military fallout from the escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The attack targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a key US airpower hub in Jordan that hosts dozens of American warplanes involved in operations against Iran.
A-10 hit, F-15s reportedly damaged
CBS reporter Jennifer Jacobs said on X that one A-10 Thunderbolt, popularly known as the Warthog, was hit during the strike and suffered damage that left it without a wing.
Around eight F-15 fighter jets also sustained light damage, although they were reportedly returned to service during the attack, according to the CBS report.
"American forces in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles defending against the Iranian strikes. The overnight damage came after the US attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a US Navy warship. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed they launched attacks at eight tankers and two warships, including the base in Jordan," Jacobs wrote.
Jordan intercepts most incoming missiles
Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the attack on the base. In a statement carried by state-backed IRNA, the Guards said they had "struck the American Al-Azraq base in Jordan with heavy missile strikes" as part of a "punitive operation".
Jordan's military said its air defence systems detected 20 ballistic missiles during the barrage. Of these, 18 were intercepted and destroyed, while two reached unpopulated areas, according to an official army statement.
Iran also said it had targeted more than a dozen vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and announced an expansion of its no-go zone around the strategic waterway.
Tehran lays out conditions to end war
Iran's Revolutionary Guards have also indicated that the conflict could end if Washington agrees to several conditions involving Lebanon, Yemen and Iran's frozen assets.
"It must... refrain from renewed threats, withdraw the Israeli regime's army from Lebanon, end the blockade of Yemen, release $24 billion in Iran's frozen assets and refrain from any interference in the country's nuclear and missile capabilities," Mohebi said, according to Fars news agency.
Trump said on Wednesday that he expected the war to end after the November midterm elections, arguing that Iran was running out of options.
"I think the war will end immediately after the election" because Iran "can't hold out any longer," Trump told journalists, while accusing Tehran of trying to influence the vote.
However, The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials have privately warned Trump's senior advisers that the conflict could continue through the remaining two years of his term.
