Israel says 4 soldiers killed by Hezbollah attack while Israeli strike in Gaza leaves 20 dead

Hezbollah's deadly drone strike on an Israeli base near Binyamina marks a major escalation, killing 4 soldiers. Israel retaliates with airstrikes, further intensifying the conflict

A Hezbollah drone attack on an Israeli army base in central Israel killed four soldiers and severely injured seven others on Sunday, marking the deadliest strike by the militant group since Israel's ground invasion of Lebanon nearly two weeks ago. The attack, near Binyamina city, came in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut that claimed 22 lives earlier in the week, according to a Hezbollah statement.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility, stating it targeted Israel's elite Golani brigade and launched dozens of missiles to overwhelm Israeli air defense systems during the drone assault. Israel's national rescue service reported a total of 61 people wounded in the attack, an unusually high number given the country's advanced air defense systems.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has escalated, with daily exchanges of fire since the war in Gaza began. Israel launched its ground offensive in Lebanon earlier this month, aiming to weaken Hezbollah and secure its northern border, allowing thousands of displaced Israelis to return home.

In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 20 people, including children, at a school in Nuseirat, where many displaced Palestinians were sheltering. Meanwhile, explosions outside Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah killed three people and injured about 50 others.

The United States announced plans to send a new air-defense system to Israel, along with the necessary troops to operate it, in response to growing regional threats. The system is expected to bolster Israel's defense against missile attacks from Hezbollah and other adversaries.

In Lebanon, Israeli strikes targeted Hezbollah positions, destroying an Ottoman-era market in Nabatiyeh and killing one person. The Lebanese Red Cross reported that paramedics responding to the aftermath of the airstrike were injured in a second attack, despite coordination with U.N. peacekeepers.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), accusing it of providing a "human shield" to Hezbollah. Israel has faced increasing international criticism for repeated incidents of firing on U.N. peacekeepers during its ground operation in Lebanon.

Inside Gaza, Israeli forces continue their bombardment of northern areas, including the densely populated Jabaliya refugee camp. The military has ordered a full evacuation of northern Gaza, but approximately 400,000 people remain. The U.N. reports that no food has entered northern Gaza since October 1, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The war, which began a year ago with a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel, has since spiraled into a broader conflict involving Hezbollah and the threat of Iranian intervention. Over 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with women and children comprising over half of the deaths. Israel claims to have killed more than 17,000 militants, though no independent verification has been provided.

As the conflict deepens, the prospect of peace remains elusive, with both sides preparing for further escalation.
