'Iran is officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD': Trump accuses Tehran of killing 'their protestors'

US President Donald Trump on Monday launched a scathing attack on Iran, declaring it a “failed nation” and claiming the country was “dead” amid renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump painted a picture of political, economic and military collapse in Iran, claiming that Tehran had effectively lost its naval and air capabilities, its currency was in crisis and members of the security forces were not being paid. He also claimed inflation in the country had reached 300 per cent and described the Iranian leadership as being in “total disarray”.

“Iran is officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!” Trump wrote, before listing what he described as the country’s military and economic failures.

Trump targets Iranian leadership

The US President also accused Iranian authorities of carrying out a deadly crackdown on anti-government demonstrators. Trump claimed that more than 100,000 protesters had been killed and said those responsible should be tried for crimes against humanity.

The figure cited by Trump has not been independently verified. Iranian authorities have reported a substantially lower death toll from the unrest and have blamed much of the violence on what they describe as foreign-backed rioters.

Trump had previously alleged that tens of thousands of people had been killed during protests in Iran, but his latest figure represents a significant increase from numbers he had cited earlier.

His remarks came amid another escalation in hostilities between the United States and Iran after a period of relative calm. US forces struck Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday, saying the operation targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launchers that were preparing to deploy rockets carrying naval mines near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iran subsequently retaliated by launching missiles towards a base hosting US troops in Jordan. Trump has vowed that Washington will respond to Tehran’s action, saying the US would “hit them hard”.

Fresh escalation raises tensions

The latest exchange has renewed concerns that the conflict could intensify after Washington had indicated that it was increasingly turning towards economic pressure and sanctions against Tehran.

The United States and Iran have been locked in a prolonged confrontation since US-Israeli military operations against Iran began in February. The conflict has also disrupted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.

Despite Trump’s repeated assertions that Iran’s governing system is close to collapse, the Iranian establishment remains in control, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continuing to play a central role in the country’s military operations.

Trump’s latest comments, however, signal a further hardening of Washington’s rhetoric. By coupling his declaration that Iran is a “failed nation” with accusations over the deaths of protesters and a warning of further US military action, the President has sharply increased pressure on Tehran as the two sides again exchange fire in the region.
