China, Russia accuse US of 'turning space into battlefield' as concerns grow over orbital weapons
China and Russia have stepped up criticism of the United States over the development of military capabilities in space, accusing Washington of accelerating an arms race beyond Earth and risking the transformation of outer space into a new battlefield. The warnings come amid growing competition among major powers over satellites, anti-satellite systems and technologies capable of protecting or disabling critical orbital infrastructure.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing opposed attempts to weaponise outer space and accused the US of seeking military superiority there. He argued that Washington was expanding its military presence and developing offensive capabilities that could threaten the security of other countries. Russia has voiced similar concerns, warning that the deployment of weapons in orbit could destabilise the existing strategic balance and trigger a wider competition for military dominance in space.
Military competition intensifies
The latest criticism comes as the US moves to strengthen its ability to defend satellites and counter hostile spacecraft. Modern militaries depend heavily on satellites for navigation, communications, intelligence gathering, missile warning and targeting, making space infrastructure increasingly important to national security. The vulnerability of those systems has consequently become a major concern for Washington as China and Russia develop their own counter-space capabilities.
The Pentagon has increasingly focused on systems capable of protecting American satellites and responding to potential threats in orbit. Washington argues that its investments are necessary because adversaries have already developed technologies that could disrupt, damage or destroy US space assets during a conflict. These include electronic warfare systems, cyber capabilities, ground-based anti-satellite weapons and spacecraft capable of approaching other satellites.
Beijing rejects weaponisation
China has maintained that outer space should be used for peaceful purposes and has called for international mechanisms to prevent an arms race. Beijing has accused Washington of using perceived threats from China and Russia to justify expanding American military capabilities in orbit.
The US, however, has repeatedly raised concerns over China’s rapidly advancing space programme. Beijing demonstrated an anti-satellite capability as far back as 2007 when it destroyed one of its own defunct weather satellites with a missile, generating thousands of pieces of orbital debris. China has since significantly expanded its military and civilian space capabilities, including satellite networks and sophisticated spacecraft.
Russia also possesses extensive counter-space capabilities and has conducted anti-satellite testing. Moscow has rejected American allegations regarding potentially dangerous Russian space weapons while accusing Washington of undermining efforts aimed at preventing the placement of weapons in orbit.
New strategic frontier
The dispute highlights a broader problem facing the international community. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, but it does not comprehensively prohibit conventional weapons or many emerging counter-space technologies. Rapid technological advances have therefore created areas where international rules remain limited or ambiguous.
Satellites have also become indispensable to civilian life, supporting telecommunications, banking, weather forecasting, disaster management and global positioning services. A military confrontation in orbit could consequently have effects far beyond armed forces, particularly if destroyed satellites generate debris capable of damaging other spacecraft.
As the US, China and Russia invest more heavily in space security, the risk is that measures taken by one country as defensive will be interpreted as offensive preparations by another. Without stronger international rules and communication between major space powers, an arena once associated primarily with scientific exploration is increasingly becoming another domain of strategic rivalry.
