Canada street name change: Ottawa considers ‘Taco Avenue’ for Trump Avenue

A street in Ottawa named after US President Donald Trump could soon get a new name, with the city council taking the first step towards renaming Trump Avenue in the Central Park neighbourhood.

In a unanimous vote on Wednesday, August 26, councillors backed the move to reconsider the name of the residential street, which has carried Trump’s name for around 25 years.

The proposal comes shortly after Trump announced that Lake Ontario would be renamed Lake America.

‘Taco Avenue’ among names being considered

Ottawa City Council is considering “TACO Avenue” as one possible replacement. “Obama Avenue” is another option, according to CNN.

The term “TACO” has reportedly been used on Wall Street as a nickname for Trump, standing for “Trump Always Chickens Out” and referring to his repeated changes in policy.

Ottawa City Councillor Tim Tierney said Canada has several geographical features carrying the Trump name, including lakes, islands and a creek. However, he noted that Trump Avenue is the only one actually named after the US president.

Councillor Riley Brockington said he plans to work with residents on changing the street's name after Ottawa's October election. He described the current name as an embarrassment.

Residents had voted on name change before

The push to rename the street is not new. In 2021, residents of the avenue were asked whether they wanted a different name.

Of the 62 households approached, 21 voted in favour of a change, while another 21 opposed it. The remaining 20 households did not vote.

Trump renames Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’

The Ottawa council's move follows Trump's announcement earlier this week that Lake Ontario would be renamed Lake America.

"We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America. The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They're nasty people," the 80-year-old Republican told reporters in the Oval Office.

The announcement came amid worsening trade tensions between the US and Canada and has drawn criticism from Canadian lawmakers.

Trump compared the move with his decision in January 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

"The lake change, Lake of America, was something I've been thinking about for a long time, actually. As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it's very routinely the Gulf of America," Trump said.
