5.1-magnitude earthquake hits southwest China’s Sichuan; tremors felt in nearby areas

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Longchang City in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Friday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The earthquake was recorded at 1:13 p.m. Beijing Time, with its epicentre at 29.23 degrees north latitude and 105.22 degrees east longitude. The tremor occurred at a depth of 13 kilometre.

The relatively shallow depth means the earthquake’s shaking could potentially have been felt across nearby areas.

Longchang is a county-level city administered by Neijiang in southeastern Sichuan. It is located close to the border with Chongqing municipality and lies roughly midway between Chengdu and Chongqing.

City lies along key transport corridor

Situated in the Sichuan Basin, Longchang serves as an important transport link between Sichuan and neighbouring regions. The city is around 30 kilometres south of central Neijiang and forms part of the wider Chengdu-Chongqing urban and economic corridor.

The region is one of southwest China’s major population and transport zones, connecting important cities and surrounding areas.

No immediate damage details

Authorities have not yet provided information on casualties or damage following the earthquake. There have also been no reports so far on whether the tremor has triggered any aftershocks.

The extent of the impact will become clearer as authorities assess areas around the epicentre and gather information from local communities.
