17 Indian fishermen repatriated after arrest by Sri Lankan Navy for alleged poaching in waters
Seventeen Indian fishermen, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching in the island nation’s waters, have been repatriated, as confirmed by the Indian High Commission. These fishermen are now on their way back to Tamil Nadu, India. The High Commission of India shared the news on X, stating, “Homecoming! 17 Indian fishermen have been successfully repatriated and are on their way to Tamil Nadu, India.”
The frequent arrests of fishermen from both India and Sri Lanka highlight a long-standing issue in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. Fishermen often find themselves inadvertently crossing into each other's waters in the Palk Strait, a narrow body of water that separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. Both nations accuse the other of taking aggressive action, with incidents involving the seizure of boats and, at times, reports of gunfire.
As of this year, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 413 Indian fishermen and seized 55 trawlers, according to an official release. The ongoing maritime boundary disputes and competition for fishing resources in the Palk Strait continue to strain ties, making it a contentious issue for both sides.
