"We could have been killed" | Mamata Banerjee alleges attack on her car in North 24 Parganas

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that her car was attacked with stones, shoes and mud during her visit to North 24 Parganas district, claiming that the incident could have resulted in her death. The incident took place in Halisahar when Banerjee was travelling to meet the family of Trinamool Congress worker Birju Keot, who died after reportedly falling ill while in police custody. Protesters gathered along the route of her convoy, leading to a tense confrontation.

Stones, shoes thrown at convoy

Banerjee alleged that stones and other objects were hurled at her vehicle as her convoy passed through the area. Reports said protesters also threw shoes and mud, while slogans were raised against the former chief minister. Banerjee claimed that bricks were thrown at the vehicle and said the occupants could have been killed in the attack. She also questioned the response of the police during the incident.

Mamata questions police response

The TMC chief accused the administration of failing to provide adequate security despite the presence of protesters along the route. She alleged that the incident reflected a serious breakdown in law and order and blamed the BJP-led state government for the situation. The episode came amid heightened political tensions surrounding Keot's death. Banerjee had travelled to the area to meet his family when protesters intercepted her convoy.

BJP denies involvement

The BJP condemned the attack while rejecting allegations that the party was behind it. State BJP leaders maintained that the party had no connection with the throwing of stones, mud or shoes at Banerjee's convoy and called for action against those responsible. The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP in West Bengal, with the two sides trading allegations over political violence and law and order in the state.
