Trump posts throwback with Kim Jong Un, recalls their ‘GREAT’ relationship

US President Donald Trump has revisited his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, sharing a photograph from their 2018 summit and saying the two leaders continue to have a good rapport despite years of tensions over North Korea's nuclear programme.

Trump posted the picture on his social media platform Truth Social. The photograph shows Trump walking alongside Kim during their historic meeting in Singapore.

“Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we’re smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!" Trump said in the post.

The same photograph had earlier been shared by Trump on June 14, 2026, but without a caption or accompanying comment.

Trump and Kim's diplomacy began in 2018

The Singapore meeting marked the first time a sitting US president met a North Korean leader. Trump and Kim held three meetings during Trump's first presidency as Washington sought progress towards denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

The diplomatic effort, however, failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Their second summit, held in Hanoi in 2019, ended without a deal. The two sides could not reach an understanding on North Korea's nuclear programme and the sanctions relief sought by Pyongyang.

Trump has since indicated that he remains willing to resume direct talks with Kim. In October 2025, he said he would “love" to meet the North Korean leader again, although no concrete plans for another meeting were announced at the time.

North Korea continues to defend nuclear programme

While Trump has maintained that he has a positive relationship with Kim, North Korea has continued to reject demands that it give up its nuclear weapons.

Pyongyang has also remained critical of US military cooperation with its allies. In July, North Korea condemned the United States and its allies following the NATO summit, accusing them of increasing military confrontation.

The North Korean government has repeatedly maintained that its military capabilities are necessary to protect its sovereignty and security.

Trump's latest post does not announce any new meeting or diplomatic initiative. It instead highlights his personal relationship with Kim, with the US president pointing to their past interactions despite the lack of progress in negotiations over North Korea's nuclear programme.
