TMC govt committed atrocities on ‘Sanatani’ Hindus: CM Suvendu

West Bengal CM alleges Hindus faced restrictions on religious programmes under previous regime, says BJP government restored their rights

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday accused the previous Trinamool Congress government of committing atrocities against ‘Sanatani’ Hindus and imposing restrictions on religious activities in the state.

Inaugurating a ‘Ravan Dahan’ programme in Salt Lake, Adhikari alleged that Hindus had been compelled to approach courts for permission to organise religious events during the tenure of the previous government.

"The earlier regime used to suppress Hindus and committed atrocities on them. Maa Durga vanquished them," the Chief Minister asserted.

Adhikari said his government was committed to protecting religious traditions and ensuring that people could celebrate festivals without unnecessary restrictions.

Invoking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, he said the state government would continue its efforts against forces it considered harmful to national interests.

"Following the vision and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we will fight against elements working against the country," Adhikari said.

The Chief Minister also accused the TMC of facilitating the settlement of alleged infiltrators in West Bengal, claiming that the BJP government had taken steps to ensure their departure from the country.

His allegations against the previous government were not accompanied by specific evidence in the remarks reported from the event.

Describing West Bengal as the land of Goddess Kali, Adhikari said the state's cultural and religious traditions had long been influenced by the Ramayana.

He highlighted the growing scale of Durga Puja celebrations, claiming that the number of pujas across West Bengal had increased to 58,000 this year from 45,000 last year.

The Chief Minister said the increase reflected the continuing importance of religious festivals in the state's cultural life.

His remarks came during Dussehra celebrations, when effigies of Ravana are traditionally burnt to symbolise the victory of good over evil.
