'Seventh attempt on my life': Abhishek Banerjee alleges attack on Kalighat home
Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has accused BJP supporters of attacking his Kalighat residence in Kolkata following a late-night clash between workers of the two parties during his birthday celebrations. The allegation triggered a fresh political confrontation, with Banerjee claiming that his supporters were assaulted and his house vandalised.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 am when a shouting match broke out between TMC and BJP workers outside his residence. The altercation began after slogans branding someone a "thief" were raised. Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters attacked his party workers with bricks and stones, leaving several injured.
Abhishek Banerjee shares video, alleges pre-planned attack
Sharing a video on X, the Diamond Harbour MP claimed that a group of people had conducted surveillance of his residence before carrying out the attack. The footage purportedly showed people pulling down banners and posters bearing his name.
"After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today. Watch the footage and see for yourself. If this is what can happen to an elected Member of Parliament, imagine the plight of the common man in WB.
This is the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months. Yet, there has been no police action and no judicial intervention. Hooligans are running riot across the state because the judiciary continues to turn a blind eye. Thank you, Milords, for remaining mute spectators! ๐๐ป", he said.
Following the incident, Banerjee came out of his residence and got into a heated exchange with police personnel and BJP supporters. He also accused the ruling party workers of assaulting the police.
'Supporters suffered serious injuries'
Speaking to the media, Banerjee alleged that the BJP supporters were carrying revolvers and had arrived with a "premeditated intent to kill".
Describing the injuries sustained by his colleagues, he said, "One of our colleagues, Tapas, had the tissue near his thumb crushed; I sent him to the hospital for stitches, but the doctor said stitches wouldn't suffice; he will require plastic surgery. Someone else suffered a fracture to the bone beneath their eye. They threw stones and bricks. All of this unfolded right in front of the police."
Banerjee also recalled an alleged attack in Sonarpur on June 19, claiming that armed individuals had attempted to target him while he was returning from Delhi. He said a complaint had been filed, but no police action followed.
Reiterating his allegations on X, the MP said the incident marked the seventh attempt on his life in 6 months and criticised the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court for their alleged inaction.
