Rain lashes Bengal as low pressure takes charge: Heavy rain alert for 5 districts

People across West Bengal woke up to a rainy Tuesday morning, with several parts of the state seeing showers since Monday night. Kolkata, too, has been witnessing intermittent rain, while overcast skies and continuous showers have kept the weather gloomy. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain across the state today as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal continues to influence the weather.

Heavy rain likely in western districts

The western parts of South Bengal are likely to see the most intense showers. Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum are among the districts expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Other districts of South Bengal may get light to moderate rain at intervals throughout the day. Some areas could also see thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Kolkata to remain cloudy

For Kolkata, the weather is expected to be less intense compared with the western districts. There is no forecast of very heavy or extremely heavy rain in the city on Tuesday.

However, residents can expect cloudy skies and spells of light to moderate rain through the day. With showers continuing, low-lying areas could see water accumulation, which may affect traffic movement during peak hours and cause inconvenience to daily commuters.

North Bengal also likely to receive rain

The wet weather is not limited to South Bengal. Rain is expected across all five upper districts of North Bengal on Tuesday.

Darjeeling and Kalimpong are likely to receive heavy rain, which could increase the risk of landslides in the hills. A heavy rain warning has also been issued for the plains of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri.

The remaining districts of North Bengal may receive light to moderate showers. With both regions expected to see rainfall, West Bengal is likely to remain under unsettled weather conditions as the low-pressure system continues to influence the state.
