North Bengal rail accident: Mamata Banerjee expresses concern

Banerjee's statement highlights ongoing worries about the safety and reliability of the railway infrastructure in the area

In a recent tweet, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep concern over another rail accident in the Phansidewa/Rangapani area of North Bengal.

A wagon of a goods train derailed near Rangapani station in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri Rail Division on Wednesday, a senior official said.

There was no report of any injury or fatality, the North-East Frontier Railway (NFR) official said.

The empty petroleum wagon, which was part of the goods train, was headed for Rangapani siding when it jumped the tracks at 11:45 am, NFR CPRO Sabyasachi De told media.

This incident follows a tragic accident in the same region just six weeks ago. At least 15 people died, and around 60 others were injured after a goods train collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani station on 17th of June.

Banerjee's statement highlights ongoing worries about the safety and reliability of the railway infrastructure in the area.
