Nandigram bypoll counting underway, Hasirani Rath leads in initial trends
Vote counting is underway for the Nandigram Assembly by-election in West Bengal, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Hasirani Rath leading in the early trends, according to local sources. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is overseeing the counting, but an official tally from the poll body is yet to be announced.
The by-election was held on October 6, recording a voter turnout of 80.89%. The seat in East Midnapore district fell vacant after Suvendu Adhikari, who won from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, retained the latter constituency.
Heavy security at counting centres
Security has been tightened at counting centres in Nandigram as officials process the votes. The bypoll is one of the first electoral contests in West Bengal since the BJP came to power in May this year, defeating the Mamata Banerjee-led government after its 15-year tenure.
The election has also unfolded against the backdrop of a split within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), which has fractured into three factions, according to the provided account.
Candidate withdrawal triggers political developments
The run-up to the by-election was marked by political developments involving the Trinamool Congress, the BJP and the Congress.
Sanchita Pradhan Dey, the candidate fielded by Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, withdrew her nomination hours after meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Following Dey's withdrawal, Banerjee announced that the Mamata-led AITC faction would support Congress candidate Milan Pradhan.
Hours later, Pradhan was arrested in connection with murder cases dating back to 2007. The Calcutta High Court subsequently granted him bail.
The counting process is continuing, with Hasirani Rath ahead in the early trends. The final outcome will be known once the ECI announces the official results.
