Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle 'attacked with large stones, mud' during Halisahar visit
Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests in North 24-Parganas on Sunday when she arrived in Halisahar to meet the family of a party worker who allegedly died while in police custody.
Banerjee’s vehicle came under attack as protesters gathered around it in Bijpur. Locals allegedly pelted the car with stones and smeared mud on the vehicle, while slogans of “chor, chor” were raised against the TMC leader.
Protesters surround Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle
The incident took place as Banerjee was travelling to meet the family of the deceased TMC worker. A group of local residents reportedly gathered around her vehicle and protested against her visit.
According to the protesters, Banerjee had come to “disturb” the area, which they claimed had been peaceful. They continued raising slogans against the former chief minister as her convoy moved through the area.
The protest quickly escalated, with Banerjee’s vehicle being targeted with stones and other objects.
Mamata alleges security lapse
Banerjee criticised the police over the incident, saying she had informed the authorities about her visit in advance but adequate security arrangements were not made.
“My car has been attacked with stones, shoes and mud. This is nothing but conspiracy. I had informed the police that I will be coming; despite that, the police did not take any security measures. The entire West Bengal is being controlled by goons,” Banerjee said.
Her remarks came shortly after the confrontation with protesters in Bijpur.
TMC worker’s death triggers visit
Banerjee had travelled to Halisahar to meet the family of a TMC worker who died after allegedly falling ill while in the custody of Halisahar police.
The circumstances surrounding the worker’s death have become the focus of attention, with Banerjee visiting the family amid the local tension.
Her visit, however, was met with opposition from residents, leading to the confrontation involving her vehicle.
The incident has added to the tension in the area, with protesters and the TMC putting forward sharply different accounts surrounding the visit and the circumstances that preceded it.
