Kolkata naked-parade case: 3 accused taken through locality shirtless for crime scene reconstruction
Three people arrested for allegedly assaulting a teenage boy, his father and the boy’s friend before forcing them to walk naked through a south Kolkata neighbourhood were taken through the locality shirtless and in shorts by police on Tuesday as part of a crime scene reconstruction.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening within the limits of Sarsuna Police Station after the boy was allegedly caught kissing his 13-year-old girlfriend. The girl's family members are accused of assaulting the three and forcing them to walk naked along a public road, triggering outrage in the area.
The arrested accused are the girl's father, elder brother and maternal uncle, while her mother has been detained, according to the information provided by the police. During Tuesday's reconstruction, the three accused were also made to walk barefoot, with ropes tied around their waists, a police official told news agency PTI.
Father alleges assault and threat involving firearm
According to the allegations, the boy and his friend were confined to a room and beaten by the girl's parents and maternal uncle. The boy was subsequently allegedly forced to call his father to the house.
The father told reporters that he was assaulted by at least six people after reaching the spot. He alleged that the girl's maternal uncle handed him a gun and gave him two options: shoot his son or walk naked alongside him.
“After I reached there, I was also assaulted by at least six people. Then the girl's maternal uncle gave me a gun, saying that I have two options. One is to shoot my son or walk naked with him,” the father said.
He added that people recorded videos of the three walking naked, describing the episode as deeply humiliating.
Video triggers outrage, police investigate firearm allegation
The incident came to light after footage purportedly showing the boy, his father and his friend being paraded naked circulated on social media. The video triggered anger among local residents, some of whom allegedly attempted to vandalise the girl's house. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
A police officer said some members of the girl's family had left the locality before officers arrived. The girl's maternal uncle was caught by residents and handed over to the police.
Police have registered a case over the alleged assault, threats and unlawful confinement. Reports also said the investigation covers allegations of attempted murder and the use of a firearm, with a case under the Arms Act. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. The firearm allegedly used in the incident had not been recovered in reports published on Monday.
The three victims have undergone medical examinations, according to reports. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and the alleged roles of those involved.
