Uttarakhand moves closer to implementing Uniform Civil Code with final draft submission

The nine-member committee, led by Shatrughna Singh, has handed over the UCC draft to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, moving Uttarakhand closer to its implementation

The final draft of rules and regulations for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand was submitted to the state government on Friday. A nine-member committee, appointed by the government and headed by former chief secretary Shatrughna Singh, presented the document to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the secretariat.

The submission of the UCC draft marks a significant step towards its implementation in Uttarakhand. The committee had finalized the draft on October 7 and sent it for printing shortly after. Now, with the document officially handed over, the state government will study the draft before presenting it to the state cabinet for approval.

Once cleared by the cabinet, the UCC will be enforced, making Uttarakhand the first state in Independent India to implement such a law. Uttarakhand, which was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000, will soon enter a new phase with the potential adoption of the Uniform Civil Code.
