UP teen fakes own kidnapping with AI image to clear Rs 3 lakh gaming debt
A 16-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur allegedly staged his own kidnapping, created an AI-generated image showing himself injured and demanded Rs 2 lakh in ransom from his father after accumulating nearly Rs 3 lakh in online gaming debt, police said. The Class 11 student was eventually traced to a friend’s house in Delhi after police launched an investigation into what initially appeared to be a kidnapping case.
Father gets ransom message
The episode began when the teenager left home for school but did not return. His father later received a message claiming that his son had been kidnapped. The sender initially demanded Rs 1 lakh for his release and warned the family against approaching the police. The ransom demand was subsequently increased to Rs 2 lakh. To make the alleged kidnapping appear convincing, an image was sent to the father showing the teenager apparently injured. The family, fearing for the boy’s safety, approached the police, prompting an investigation to locate him.
AI image used
Investigators later discovered that the purported evidence of the boy’s captivity had been fabricated. Police said the teenager used artificial intelligence to generate an image depicting himself with an injured or bloodied eye. The picture was then sent to his father to create the impression that his kidnappers had assaulted him. The use of an AI-generated image initially added credibility to the kidnapping claim and heightened the family’s fears. Investigators, however, began examining the digital trail connected to the ransom messages and the teenager’s movements.
Traced to Delhi
Police tracked the teenager to Delhi, where he was found staying at a friend’s house. Once traced, the boy was questioned about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the ransom messages. According to police, the investigation revealed that no kidnapping had taken place. The teenager had allegedly planned the entire episode himself and used the fabricated image and ransom messages to convince his father that he was being held captive.
Rs 3 lakh gaming debt
Police said the alleged motive behind the elaborate deception was online gaming. The teenager had reportedly lost nearly Rs 3 lakh while playing online games and was under pressure to repay the money. Unable to tell his family about the losses, he allegedly devised the fake kidnapping plan to obtain funds from his father.
Investigators believe the boy hoped that the family would pay the ransom, allowing him to use the money to settle his gaming-related liabilities. The incident has highlighted how financial losses linked to online gaming can push young users towards extreme behaviour, while also demonstrating how easily generative AI tools can be misused to create convincing false evidence.
Probe continues
Police are examining whether anyone else assisted the teenager in planning or carrying out the fake kidnapping. Investigators are also looking into the online gaming transactions and circumstances in which the teenager accumulated such a substantial debt. The boy has been reunited with his family following the investigation. Police are continuing to examine the case, including the possibility that others may have been involved. What began as a suspected kidnapping operation therefore turned out to be an elaborate deception involving online gaming losses, fabricated ransom demands and an AI-generated image designed to mislead both the teenager’s family and investigators.
