Rajya Sabha MP’s son booked after Aston Martin crash kills 26-year-old woman in Hyderabad
The son of Jana Sena Party Rajya Sabha MP Lingamaneni Ramesh has been booked after an Aston Martin he was allegedly driving struck and killed a 26-year-old woman near Inorbit Mall in Hyderabad’s Madhapur area, police said. The victim, identified as Bharati Mukhi, worked as a sales executive at the Lifestyle store in Inorbit Mall. The accident took place on August 16 when she was returning to the mall after stepping out with a colleague to collect lunch.
Police identified the driver as Lingamaneni Sanjush, son of Ramesh, a Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh. A case has been registered against Sanjush under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with causing death by negligence.
Woman was returning from lunch
According to the complaint in the case, Bharati and her colleague Pooja Ashok had stepped out of the mall around 3 pm and gone towards the ITC Kohenur area to collect food.
As they returned to their workplace, Bharati attempted to cross the road opposite the mall. Police said the Aston Martin allegedly driven by Sanjush approached at high speed and struck her. Investigators have alleged that the vehicle was being driven in a rash and negligent manner at the time of the collision.
Bharati suffered a serious head injury. She was taken to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills in the same car involved in the accident, but doctors declared her brought dead.
The incident subsequently led to a complaint being filed with Madhapur Police, following which investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the crash and identified Sanjush as the person allegedly behind the wheel.
Case registered under BNS
Police booked Sanjush under Section 106(1) of the BNS. The provision covers causing the death of a person through a rash or negligent act that does not amount to culpable homicide and provides for imprisonment of up to five years along with a fine.
Police said no custodial arrest was initially made as the offence invoked in the case is bailable and carries a punishment of less than seven years. A notice was served on Sanjush as part of the investigation.
Investigators have also said that there was no indication that Sanjush was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident and that he did not have previous cases against him.
Police probe continues
The case has drawn attention because of the accused’s connection to a sitting Rajya Sabha MP and the involvement of a high-end luxury vehicle. Police, however, have said the investigation is being conducted under the provisions applicable to the road accident.
Ramesh represents the Jana Sena Party in the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. The party is part of the ruling coalition in the state.
Police are continuing to examine evidence related to the accident, including the circumstances in which the vehicle was being driven and the sequence of events immediately before Bharati was struck. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
