Mann slams Congress for boycotting final day of Punjab Assembly session

Punjab CM accused opposition party of creating disruptions and walking out of House despite demanding discussions on important public issues

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday lashed out at the Congress, accusing it of boycotting the last day of the state Assembly session and claiming that the opposition party's conduct in the Vidhan Sabha had exposed a contradiction between its public statements and actions.

"Their only job is to create a ruckus and walk out. Earlier, they said the session is not called. When it is convened, they do not come. If they come (to the House), then they do not sit. The Congress has no agenda," Mann said while speaking to reporters here.

The Chief Minister further said that while the Congress claimed to oppose the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, its members walked away when they had an opportunity to participate in a meaningful discussion on the issue in the Vidhan Sabha last week.

"Their actions speak for themselves," Mann said.

On Tuesday, heated exchanges took place between Congress and AAP legislators outside the Assembly on the last day of the session after opposition MLAs alleged that they were prevented from entering the House.

The confrontation came amid sharp differences between the ruling AAP and the Congress over the functioning of the Assembly and the opposition's participation in legislative proceedings.

While Mann accused the Congress of deliberately avoiding discussions, opposition legislators maintained that they had been prevented from entering the House.

On another issue, Mann said that AAP would seek a fresh mandate on the strength of its "pro-people governance", including quality schools and hospitals, free electricity, health insurance and financial assistance for women.

He maintained that the government's welfare initiatives were aimed at improving people's lives and providing essential services and financial support to vulnerable sections.

The Chief Minister said the party would approach voters with its record of governance and public welfare measures.

Referring to the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, a financial assistance scheme for women, Mann said the initiative was rooted in the principle of ensuring dignity, respect and financial support for women.

"The objective is to empower women so that they can live with confidence and self-respect without having to depend on others for their basic needs. Women's welfare, dignity and financial independence must remain at the centre of governance," he said.

Lamenting the politicisation of a welfare initiative intended for women, Mann questioned how the Congress could justify opposing or undermining a measure designed to improve their lives.

"Our government remains committed to policies that put women first and provide them with meaningful support," he added.
