Did Punjab schools skip Independence Day celebrations? NHRC seeks report from govt
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Punjab government over allegations that Independence Day celebrations were not held in some government schools across the state.
The matter is being examined by the NHRC Bench headed by Priyank Kanoongo. The complaint specifically raises concerns about schools in rural, remote and border areas, where students were allegedly unable to take part in the celebrations held on August 15.
NHRC seeks details from Punjab government
The Commission has asked the state government to provide state-wise, district-wise and school-wise information on Independence Day observances in government schools.

The report is expected to include details of schools where the national flag was hoisted, the National Anthem was sung and students participated in the celebrations. The government has also been asked to identify schools where the prescribed activities were not conducted and explain the reasons for the reported non-compliance.
Focus on children in remote and border areas
The NHRC has specifically asked the Punjab government to verify the situation in schools located in rural, remote and border areas.
The Commission is examining whether students in these locations had access to the same educational, cultural and civic opportunities linked to Independence Day as children studying elsewhere in the state.
The Bench has also sought details on any disparity between schools based on their geographical location.
Why Independence Day participation matters
The NHRC has noted that national occasions such as Independence Day can provide children with an opportunity to learn about India's freedom struggle, the Constitution, national symbols and civic responsibilities.
The Commission is therefore looking into whether students were denied an opportunity to participate in these activities because of where their schools were located.
Punjab gets four weeks to submit report
The Chief Secretary of Punjab has been directed to submit a detailed Action Taken/Compliance Report within four weeks.

The NHRC Bench has also sought relevant information from the Ministry of Education, Government of India, while the Ministry of Home Affairs has been informed for appropriate action.
The proceedings will seek to establish whether Independence Day observances were conducted as required in the state's government schools and whether students in rural, remote and border areas were treated differently in terms of their opportunity to participate in the national celebrations.
