Fresh Jharsuguda Raids Detain 444 Bengali-Speaking Migrant Worker
Jharsuguda, Odisha: On July 7, Odisha Police conducted raids across Jharsuguda district, detaining 444 Bengali-speaking migrants where many daily-wage laborers—from West Bengal. Authorities say the move targets suspected illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Rohingya communities. A Joint Investigation Team is meticulously verifying documents such as passports, voter IDs, Aadhaar, and ration cards. So far, 25 detainees carrying valid Indian documents have been released, while the rest remain under scrutiny. West Bengal’s ruling TMC has slammed the detentions as harassment of Bengali migrants. MP Mahua Moitra confirmed 23 workers from Nadia are among those detained, despite valid credentials, and demanded their release citing constitutional rights. Inspector General Himanshu Lal emphasized that the crackdown aims to uphold national security—not target any community. He assured detained individuals are held humanely and encouraged public trust in the thorough verification process.
