New railway line connecting Aizawl nears completion, boosting Mizoram's connectivity and growth

The 51.38 km Bhairabi-Sairang railway line is set to transform Mizoram's communication, commerce, and tourism. With 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and four new stations, completion is in sight

The Bhairabi-Sairang railway line project, spanning 51.38 km and aimed at connecting Aizawl, Mizoram, with the rest of India, is in its final stages of completion, according to a statement by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday. The project, which is divided into four sections—Bhairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang, and Mualkhang–Sairang—will serve as a crucial link for the region. So far, 17.38 km of the railway line has been completed, with train services on this section starting in August 2024.

A major part of the project involves navigating the challenging terrain, with the construction of 48 tunnels covering a total of 12,853 meters. As of now, 12,807 meters of tunneling has been finished. Additionally, the project will feature 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and will include five road overbridges and six road underbridges.

The tallest pier of the project, standing at 104 meters near Sairang station, has already been completed, further demonstrating the progress made on this ambitious project. Once finished, the railway will include four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.

Though the construction has faced numerous challenges—such as difficult hilly terrain, extended monsoons, limited access to materials, and a shortage of skilled labor—the project is set to significantly improve connectivity for Mizoram. It is expected to bolster local industries, boost tourism, and reduce transportation costs for both passengers and goods. Upon completion, the Bhairabi-Sairang railway line will be a key driver of economic growth and improved infrastructure in Mizoram, positively impacting the state's future.
