‘Made fake PMO ID using ChatGPT’: Accused confesses after PM Modi's event security breach

A 24-year-old businessman arrested for allegedly using a fake Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) identity card to enter Jio World Plaza in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) has reportedly told police that he created the forged credentials using ChatGPT.

Rohan Parikh was arrested five days ago along with his associate Dilip Kunde, a 49-year-old former Army personnel. The security breach took place a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at the nearby Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.

Why did Parikh make the fake ID?

According to the police remand application presented before the Magistrate court on Friday, Parikh allegedly admitted to making the fake PMO identity card and other official-looking documents using ChatGPT since 2025.

Police told the court that he did so 'to elevate his social standing and boost his self-esteem within his family and social circles and also to impress them".

Investigators are now checking whether the forged documents were used elsewhere. A search of Parikh's Khar residence allegedly resulted in the recovery of several documents linked to the PMO. His phone was also examined, with police claiming they found searches related to drafting PMO correspondence.

How the security breach happened

The incident occurred on September 7, when Parikh arrived at the mall with Kunde and another associate, who remains absconding.

Security personnel stopped the group after allegedly noticing that Kunde was carrying a revolver. During the argument, Parikh claimed to be a PMO official and showed a digital identity card, which was later found to be fake.

The group briefly entered the mall and bought a perfume and wallet before leaving. CCTV footage and vehicle details subsequently helped investigators trace Parikh to Khar.

Police said the incident was not connected to Modi's scheduled programme.

Defence claims Parikh was duped

Parikh's lawyers have claimed that he may himself have been misled into believing he had links with the PMO. The defence said a person using the name Tarun Gupta or Tarun Kapoor contacted Parikh in 2024 and offered him an advisory role on defence policy.

Investigators said they found no evidence confirming the appointment or the alleged communications.

Court sends accused to judicial custody

On Friday, the court rejected the police request for further custody and sent Parikh and Kunde to 14-day judicial custody.

Both have applied for bail. The prosecution has been asked to respond by September 17.
