Heavy rain triggers landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla; at least 5 killed, several feared trapped

A landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla area claimed five lives on Wednesday, while four to five people are feared trapped under the rubble, officials said.

Rescue teams from multiple agencies are conducting an intensive search operation, using specialised victim-detection cameras to look for signs of life beneath the debris. Rescue teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and other agencies were deployed at the site.

The incident took place around 3 am in the Ashoknagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ghatkopar police. DCP Ganesh Shinde said four to five people were likely trapped under the debris.

“Due to the rain, a landslide has occurred in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police. Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operation is underway. Police personnel are deployed here, along with all the necessary teams for the rescue operation—including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies. It happened around 3 am. Around 4–5 people are likely trapped,” Shinde told news agency ANI.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also reached the spot to oversee the search and rescue operation.

Two killed, two injured

Officials said two people were injured in the landslide. They were identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14. Both were taken to a hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.

The two people who died were identified as Sahil Ansari, 28, and Mohamad Samir, 14. They were declared brought dead at Rajawadi Hospital.

Visuals from the spot showed relatives mourning the deaths, while people gathered around to offer support as ambulances transported the bodies.

Heavy rain disrupts Mumbai

The landslide came after heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai on Tuesday. SpiceJet also issued an advisory to passengers amid the weather conditions.

The city has witnessed spells of heavy rain in recent weeks, affecting air traffic and operations at Mumbai airport. Waterlogging has also disrupted road and other transport services in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department has issued rain alerts during periods of intense rainfall.

Two killed in Vile Parle fire

The landslide came hours after another tragedy in Mumbai, where two people were killed and six others injured in a fire at a 12-storey residential building in Vile Parle.

The fire broke out in two flats on the 11th floor of Shanta Bhavan at around 10 pm on Tuesday. Officials said the blaze spread to electrical wiring and installations, an AC unit and other household items across an area of around 4,000 square feet.

Eight people, including two fire personnel, were injured and taken to two hospitals. A two-and-a-half-year-old child, identified as Abir, and a 23-year-old woman, Ankita, were declared brought dead at Nanavati Hospital, according to a civic official.
