Thrissur accident: 8 engineering students from Tamil Nadu killed in car-lorry crash
At least eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a lorry parked along a highway in Kerala’s Thrissur district, police said on Saturday.
The fatal accident took place at around 11.40 pm on Friday at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam. According to police, the car struck the parked lorry while travelling along the highway, killing all eight occupants at the spot.
The vehicle had a Tamil Nadu registration and was reportedly heading from the Guruvayur side towards Kodungallur when the collision occurred.
Rescue operation at accident site
Following the crash, local residents joined fire and rescue personnel and police in an operation to retrieve the victims from the badly damaged car.
The bodies were subsequently taken to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College, where they were kept following the accident.
Students were travelling in Tamil Nadu-registered car
The victims were engineering students from Tamil Nadu, police said. The circumstances surrounding why the car collided with the parked lorry were not immediately detailed in the information available.
The accident happened late at night on the highway in Panambikkunnu, with the impact leaving the students trapped inside the vehicle. Rescue teams and locals worked together to remove them from the car after the crash.
Police confirmed that the accident was reported at around 11.40 pm on Friday and that the victims died at the scene.
