Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and his family have been included in the Election Commission's discrepancy list as Karnataka undertakes a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its electoral rolls.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Nilekani, his wife Rohini Nilekani, and their children Janhvi Nandan Nilekani and Nihar Nilekani have been marked as "Unmapped with last SIR". The category covers voters whose names could not be matched with the 2002 electoral rolls.
The family is listed in the draft electoral roll for the BTM Layout constituency and votes at Reddy Janasangha High School in Third Block, Koramangala.
Notices to follow during verification
The Nilekanis are expected to receive notices as part of the document verification process. They will have to provide one of the 11 documents approved by the ECI to establish their eligibility for inclusion in the final electoral roll.
The final roll is scheduled to be published on October 27.
Nikhil Kamath, Shivarajkumar also flagged
The discrepancy exercise has also flagged the electoral records of Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath and Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, according to Hindustan Times.
In Shivarajkumar's case, officials completed the verification at his residence, meaning he did not have to appear at an election office.
"We've a provision to complete the process for VIPs without their appearance at the hearing," an ECI official told Hindustan Times. The Booth Level Officer can complete the verification at the voter's doorstep, the official said.
CNR Rao's record had a name discrepancy
Bharat Ratna awardee and scientist Professor CNR Rao's name also appeared on the discrepancy list, leading to questions over whether he had received an SIR notice. The Election Commission later clarified that no notice had been issued to him.
Bengaluru Urban District Election Officer and Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said a discrepancy was found in Rao's electoral record. However, the Booth Level Officer recommended that his name be retained in the final roll without issuing a notice.
The issue was linked to differences between the name recorded in the current electoral roll and the 2002 records.
43.81 lakh voters receive notices
Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba has also appeared on the discrepancy list and was issued a notice over a name mismatch, The Indian Express reported.
Overall, notices have been generated for 43.81 lakh voters in Karnataka. They must submit the required documents to Booth Level Officers by October 22.
Reports have also highlighted difficulties faced by voters over minor differences in names, parent details and transliteration between English and Kannada records.
The final electoral roll covering 4.46 crore voters is scheduled to be published on October 27.
