Haryana raises sanitation workers’ monthly remuneration to Rs 22,590; will be applied from July 1

The Haryana government has announced an increase in the monthly remuneration of sanitation workers employed across the state, revising their pay to Rs 22,590 with effect from July 1, 2026. The decision is expected to benefit sanitation workers engaged by municipal bodies and other government establishments and is part of the state's efforts to improve the financial security and working conditions of employees responsible for maintaining cleanliness in urban and rural areas.

The revised remuneration follows the government's earlier commitment to periodically increase payments to sanitation workers and bring greater uniformity to their wages.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the government remained committed to safeguarding the interests of sanitation workers and ensuring that those performing essential public services received appropriate financial support.

Revised payment from July

Under the latest decision, eligible sanitation workers will receive monthly remuneration of Rs 22,590 from July 1. The revision means arrears will become payable for the period between the effective date and implementation of the enhanced remuneration.

The government has directed the departments and authorities concerned to implement the revised rates.

Sanitation workers form a crucial part of Haryana's municipal and civic services, carrying out waste collection, sweeping, cleaning and other essential tasks across towns and cities.

The revision assumes significance amid rising living costs and longstanding demands for better wages, employment security and welfare benefits for sanitation personnel.

The Saini government has maintained that improving the economic position of workers at the lower end of the government and civic employment structure remains a priority.

Focus on worker welfare

Haryana has introduced several measures in recent years aimed at providing greater protection and financial assistance to sanitation workers and their families.

The state has sought to address issues ranging from remuneration and occupational safety to social security benefits. The government has also emphasised providing protective equipment to workers involved in potentially hazardous sanitation activities.

Sanitation work has increasingly become a focus of policy intervention at both the state and central levels, particularly as governments attempt to mechanise hazardous cleaning operations and improve safeguards for workers.

The Centre has also been pursuing programmes aimed at eliminating unsafe practices in sewer and septic-tank cleaning while promoting mechanised alternatives.

For municipal administrations, however, sanitation continues to require a substantial workforce responsible for everyday waste management and cleanliness across public spaces.

Government highlights dignity of labour

The Haryana government has repeatedly stressed that sanitation workers should receive dignity, financial security and adequate protection while performing their duties.

The latest increase in remuneration is intended to provide workers with greater income stability while recognising their contribution to maintaining public hygiene.

It also comes as Haryana expands its urban infrastructure, with growing towns and cities placing additional pressure on waste collection, processing and sanitation systems.

Rapid urbanisation has increased the volume of municipal waste generated across the state, making the role of sanitation workers increasingly important to the functioning of local bodies.

The revised remuneration will add to the expenditure of the government and civic authorities, but the administration has presented the measure as part of its broader commitment to worker welfare.

With the new rate fixed at Rs 22,590 per month, the government expects the enhanced payment to provide meaningful financial relief to sanitation personnel while strengthening its efforts to improve conditions for frontline civic workers.
