Haryana Police intensify Diwali security, target illegal firecracker trade

Police had been directed to inspect firecracker shops, warehouses and transport routes, with sales restricted to designated and authorised locations

Haryana Police have stepped up security arrangements across the state ahead of Diwali on November 8, directing district police units to intensify inspections, patrolling and enforcement against the illegal manufacture, storage, transportation and sale of firecrackers.

Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal issued directions to senior police officers to ensure strict compliance with firecracker regulations and prevent fire-related accidents during the festive celebrations.

The police have been instructed to coordinate with other government departments and implement the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, other courts and the Haryana government concerning the sale and use of firecrackers.

Singhal said public safety and the maintenance of law and order during festivals remained among the police department's foremost priorities. He directed officers to make comprehensive arrangements to ensure that Diwali celebrations take place peacefully and without untoward incidents.

Police officers have been directed to conduct special enforcement drives in their respective jurisdictions to identify locations where firecrackers are manufactured, stored or sold.

Inspection teams will examine warehouses, storage facilities and retail outlets to verify whether operators possess valid licences and comply with prescribed safety requirements.

The directions also cover vehicles transporting firecrackers and the routes used for their movement. Police personnel will monitor transportation activities to detect unauthorised consignments and take action against violations.

The DGP instructed officers to ensure that firecracker sales are permitted only at designated and pre-identified locations. Vendors operating outside authorised areas or violating applicable regulations will face enforcement action.

The inspections are intended to prevent the unsafe storage and movement of explosive materials, particularly in densely populated commercial and residential areas.

Police have also been asked to strengthen patrolling in markets, crowded public places and other sensitive locations during the festive period.

The increased deployment is aimed at maintaining public order, monitoring compliance with firecracker restrictions and ensuring a prompt response to emergencies.

Singhal emphasised the need for effective coordination between police units and other departments involved in festival-related safety arrangements.

Officials have been directed to remain vigilant against unauthorised activities that could endanger residents or disrupt celebrations.

As part of the preparedness measures, the Fire Department and hospitals have been advised to remain alert and make necessary arrangements to respond to emergencies during Diwali.

The coordination measures are intended to ensure that incidents involving firecrackers, including fires and injuries, can be addressed without delay.

Police have also appealed to residents to purchase firecrackers only from authorised vendors and avoid products sold through illegal or unregulated channels.

Citizens have been urged to report suspicious activities, including the unauthorised storage or transportation of firecrackers, to the authorities.

The DGP said the objective of the statewide exercise was to ensure compliance with safety regulations while allowing people to celebrate the festival in a peaceful and secure environment.

The enhanced security arrangements will remain focused on preventing fire hazards, checking illegal firecracker trade and maintaining law and order as Diwali approaches.
