Haryana: NSG launches first all-women commando course for police, CAPF personnel

The National Security Guard (NSG) has launched its first Mahila Commando Conversion Course for women personnel from State Police Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), opening a new route for women personnel to train in specialised counter-terror operations.

The 12-week programme is being conducted at the NSG facility in Manesar, Haryana's Gurugram district. It is aimed at preparing selected women personnel for demanding operational roles through intensive training in combat and counter-terror skills.

Training for specialised operations

The course covers a range of areas, including physical conditioning, weapons handling, marksmanship, tactical intervention and hostage rescue.

"The course is meticulously designed to forge battle-hardened women commandos through intensive training in physical conditioning, weapons proficiency and marksmanship, tactical intervention, hostage rescue and other specialised domains of counter-terror operations," NSG said in a post on X.

The training is also intended to establish common operational standards among women personnel drawn from different security forces.

"By extending the NSG's niche counter-terror expertise to women personnel across Forces, we seek to create a larger pool of operationally capable women, foster common professional benchmarks and strengthen interoperability across India's security establishment," the post added.

Women commandos to return to parent forces

The women undergoing the course will return to their respective parent cadres after completing the programme. The NSG said their enhanced skills and operational experience would help strengthen capabilities within their own forces.

The training is expected to give the personnel specialised expertise that can be used in their respective organisations, while also contributing to a broader pool of trained women capable of taking on counter-terror assignments.

NSG calls it a milestone

The initiative has also been described by the NSG as an important step in expanding women's role in India's security apparatus.

Describing the programme as a defining milestone in women's empowerment, the NSG said the first Mahila Commando Conversion Course represents not only greater participation of women in security duties but also their preparation for highly specialised operational responsibilities.

"It will prepare women to shoulder the most demanding specialist roles and contribute decisively to the evolving contours of internal security. Truly - She Who Dares, Leads," exclaimed the NSG post on X.
