Haryana hikes sugarcane price by Rs 35 per quintal over two years
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday announced a phased increase of Rs 35 per quintal in sugarcane prices over the next two years, raising the rate to Rs 430 per quintal for the 2026-27 season and Rs 450 per quintal for 2027-28.
The decision is aimed at providing financial relief to sugarcane growers facing rising cultivation expenses, particularly higher costs of diesel, labour and fertilisers.
In a statement, Saini said the sugarcane price in Haryana stood at Rs 415 per quintal during the 2025-26 season. Under the revised structure, the rate will increase by Rs 15 per quintal to Rs 430 in 2026-27, followed by another increase of Rs 20 per quintal in the subsequent season.
The cumulative increase of Rs 35 per quintal by 2027-28 is expected to improve farmers' earnings while encouraging sugarcane cultivation in the state.

Explaining the financial implications of the revised rates, Saini said the average sugarcane yield generally ranges between 700 and 800 quintals per hectare, equivalent to approximately 283 to 324 quintals per acre.
Based on these production levels, the cumulative increase of Rs 35 per quintal is expected to provide farmers with additional income of approximately Rs 10,000 to Rs 11,300 per acre per season by 2027-28, compared with the price prevailing in 2025-26.
The projected benefit will depend on actual crop yields and the quantity of sugarcane supplied by individual farmers.
The Chief Minister said the increase would help growers manage their cultivation expenses while improving the financial returns from sugarcane farming.

Saini said farmers had raised concerns about increasing production costs during his recent interactions with various agricultural organisations.
According to the Chief Minister, growers highlighted the financial pressure arising from higher prices of diesel, fertilisers and agricultural labour, which have increased the overall cost of cultivating sugarcane.
He said the government's decision to raise the price to Rs 450 per quintal over the next two seasons was intended to help farmers offset these additional expenses.
The revised rates, he added, would provide growers with greater financial support while addressing concerns raised by farmers' organisations.

The Chief Minister said the enhanced sugarcane prices would also encourage farmers to continue cultivating the crop and potentially increase production in the state.
Higher sugarcane output would help ensure adequate supplies to sugar mills, allowing them to operate closer to their full processing capacity, he said.
Saini maintained that the decision was intended to benefit both sugarcane growers and the state's sugar industry by supporting farm incomes and ensuring the availability of raw material for mills.
The revised price structure will be implemented in two stages, with the first increase taking effect in the 2026-27 season and the second in 2027-28.
