WATCH | Satya Niketan collapse caught on CCTV as man runs moments before structure falls

A CCTV camera captured the moment a multi-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan suddenly collapsed, sending a huge cloud of dust across the road and triggering panic in the area.

The footage, recorded around 1.15 pm on Sunday, shows a roadside hawker sitting beside his cart. He appears to notice something overhead, gets up and runs moments before the structure comes crashing down.

The building, located near Delhi University's South Campus, was being used as a boys' paying guest accommodation. Police sources said repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed. The exact cause is yet to be established.

Seven dead, 13 rescued from debris

The collapse has claimed seven lives so far. Officials said 13 people have been rescued from the debris of the nearly 50-year-old building.

Five victims were brought dead to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, while another critically injured person later died during treatment. An AIIMS update said 11 injured people were taken to the trauma centre. Three remain admitted, one underwent limb surgery and another was discharged after observation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said one person rescued during overnight operations was later declared dead.

Rescue teams search through rubble

Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Disaster Management Authority personnel have been working at the site. NDRF teams are using trained sniffer dogs while rescuers search different sections of the debris for survivors and victims.

Police have registered a case against the building owner and others. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed officials to investigate the collapse and take action against those found responsible.

Neighbouring building declared dangerous

The MCD has issued a precautionary notice for the adjoining building, asking occupants to vacate it. The civic body described the property as being in a "ruinous" and dangerous condition and directed its owner to demolish it within three days.

Families wait for news

The collapse has left families searching for missing relatives. Priyanshi, whose brother Pawan was staying at the PG, said she came to the site after learning about the collapse through social media.

"I found out through social media that a building had collapsed in South Campus and that my brother was inside. I came here, but I have no information about whether he is in the hospital, whether he has been rescued, or where he is. No one from the administration contacted me," she said.

Another student, Anmol Yadav, said his friend Neeraj was trapped under the rubble before being rescued by NDRF and police personnel and taken to hospital.
