Two labourers injured as shuttering collapses at under-construction godown in Delhi’s Narela

The workers were trapped under debris after a temporary support structure gave way at the construction site in Budhpur

Two labourers were injured after the shuttering at an under-construction godown collapsed in outer north Delhi’s Narela on Sunday morning, trapping them under the debris, officials said.

The incident took place around 11 am in the Budhpur area, where construction work was underway at a godown. According to preliminary information, workers were engaged in shuttering work when a portion of the temporary support structure suddenly gave way.

Workers rescued

Two labourers were trapped under the debris following the collapse. They were pulled out and rushed to Hasija Hospital in a CATS ambulance before a Delhi Fire Service (DFS) team reached the site, officials said.

The injured workers were identified by a DFS official as Naresh Pajwan, 28, and Sunil, 20. Their immediate medical condition was not specified.

Shuttering is a temporary supporting structure used during construction to hold freshly poured concrete in position until it hardens and becomes strong enough to support itself.

Four fire tenders rushed

The DFS received information about the incident and dispatched four fire tenders to the spot. By the time fire personnel arrived, both workers had already been rescued and shifted to hospital.

Police and fire officials subsequently inspected the site and confirmed that no other worker remained trapped under the debris.

Officials said the plot where construction was underway measures around 1,000 square yards, while the portion affected by the collapse covered approximately 100 square yards.

Cause being investigated

The circumstances that led to the shuttering giving way were not immediately clear. Officials said the exact cause of the collapse was being ascertained. Authorities are expected to examine the construction site and the temporary support arrangement to determine what led to the incident.
