Traffic curbs near Rajghat, Vijay Ghat in Delhi from 5 am today
Delhi Traffic Police has announced special traffic arrangements around Rajghat and Vijay Ghat on Friday, October 2, in view of programmes marking Gandhi Jayanti and the 122nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The arrangements will remain in force from 5 am to 11 am, when increased movement is expected around the two memorials.
The advisory comes as dignitaries and members of the public are expected to visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Vijay Ghat to commemorate Shastri's birth anniversary. Police have asked motorists travelling through the area during the morning hours to plan their journeys accordingly and allow additional time.
Special arrangements for six hours
Traffic management measures will be in place between 5 am and 11 am. Police have advised commuters to remain patient, observe traffic rules and cooperate with personnel deployed in the area.
Motorists have also been asked to strictly follow diversion signs and directions issued by traffic personnel. The measures are aimed at managing the increased flow of visitors while minimising disruption to regular traffic around central Delhi.
Rajghat roads under watch
Rajghat lies close to several important traffic corridors, including Ring Road, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and Netaji Subhash Marg. Increased traffic around the memorials could affect movement on surrounding stretches during the morning.
With ceremonial programmes taking place during the period, commuters using roads around Rajghat and Vijay Ghat could encounter slower traffic or temporary diversions depending on vehicular and VIP movement in the area.
Traffic personnel will be deployed to regulate vehicles and guide motorists. Commuters have consequently been advised to follow barricades and diversion instructions even if their regular route appears accessible.
Motorists asked to plan ahead
People travelling through central Delhi during the six-hour period have been advised to factor in possible delays. Those who do not need to travel through the affected area during the morning may consider alternative routes to avoid congestion.
Commuters have also been advised to keep track of traffic updates as diversions and restrictions could change depending on conditions around the memorials.
Tributes at two memorials
October 2 is observed as Gandhi Jayanti across the country, with Rajghat in Delhi serving as the principal venue for official tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. The day also marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose memorial is at Vijay Ghat.
The programmes are expected to bring additional traffic to the area early Friday, making the 5 am to 11 am period particularly important for commuters planning to use roads around Rajghat and Vijay Ghat. Delhi Traffic Police has urged road users to cooperate with personnel on duty and follow the designated traffic arrangements until normal movement is restored.
