Three Delhi cops attacked with chilli powder, bricks after motorcycle seizure
Three Delhi Police personnel were injured after a group allegedly threw chilli powder into their eyes and attacked them with bricks and wooden sticks following a dispute over the seizure of a motorcycle in northwest Delhi’s Mukundpur area, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred in Janta Vihar under the jurisdiction of Bhalswa Dairy police station when Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh were carrying out routine patrolling and vehicle checks. During the exercise, the policemen spotted a motorcycle allegedly being driven without valid documents. The vehicle was seized and taken to the police station for deposition under Section 66 of the Delhi Police Act.
Confrontation turns violent
According to police, the two head constables later returned to their beat area at around 3.30 pm. They were then confronted by a group that allegedly included the motorcycle owner and members of his family.
An argument broke out over the police action before the confrontation turned violent. The group allegedly threw chilli powder into the policemen’s eyes and assaulted them using bricks and wooden sticks. Head Constable Tinu, who arrived at the spot to help his colleagues, was also allegedly attacked by the group. All three policemen suffered injuries and were provided medical treatment. Head Constable Dinesh sustained an injury to his head. Police said the three personnel were in stable condition following treatment.
Juvenile apprehended
Police managed to apprehend a 17-year-old boy in connection with the incident with assistance from local residents. Other people allegedly involved in the attack fled the spot before they could be caught. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and teams have been formed to identify and trace the remaining accused.
Police have identified the principal absconding accused as Sunil, alias Pankaj, who is described by investigators as a local history-sheeter. According to officials, five previous criminal cases are registered against him, including two under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Police said some of the other cases against him involve serious offences.
Search for main accused underway
Police teams are carrying out searches to locate Sunil and others suspected of participating in the assault. Investigators are also working to establish the individual roles of those present during the confrontation. The incident is being investigated on the basis of statements from the injured personnel and other evidence collected from the area.
The attack began with what police described as a routine enforcement action over a motorcycle without valid documentation, but rapidly escalated after the officers returned to the neighbourhood. Further arrests are expected as police continue their search for the absconding suspects.
