Neha Bora calls fresh protest seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation; Delhi Police detain protesters
Delhi Police detained protesters near RK Ashram Marg Metro Station on Sunday, October 11, as fresh demonstrations were called amid the continuing agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The latest mobilisation followed a call by All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora for fresh protests. Demonstrators attempted to assemble near the metro station, but police intervened as restrictions on gatherings remained in force across parts of the national capital.
The agitation centres on concerns surrounding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with protesters demanding Kumar’s resignation over the controversy.
Fresh mobilisation follows Saturday’s crackdown
Sunday’s gathering came a day after large-scale demonstrations led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which drew participation from student groups, activists and opposition leaders.
Delhi Police detained thousands of protesters at several locations across the city on Saturday. Among those detained were AISA national president Neha Bora, activist Yogendra Yadav, advocate Prashant Bhushan and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya.
The detentions took place amid heightened security measures as demonstrators sought to press their demands over the electoral-roll revision exercise and Kumar’s continuation as Chief Election Commissioner.
Protesters seek alternative gathering points
With access to Jantar Mantar restricted, protesters attempted to regroup at other locations, including Dilli Haat. Police continued to enforce restrictions on Sunday as fresh calls for demonstrations brought protesters back onto the streets.
The continuing mobilisation reflects the opposition and activist-led campaign against the SIR process, which has become a focal point of criticism directed at the Election Commission. Demonstrators have demanded accountability from the poll body and called for Kumar’s resignation.
Police action against protesters continued as authorities sought to prevent gatherings at locations where restrictions remained in place.
