Lady Shri Ram College shifts classes online after alleged rape of minor at park near college

Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) cancelled regular classes Tuesday and shifted Wednesday’s classes online following the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir, around two kilometres from the college, with the administration saying the safety and well-being of students remained its “paramount” concern.

The minor was allegedly raped by three men inside the park Monday evening. The incident has triggered concerns among students and members of the college community over safety in and around the area.

College steps up support

LSR Principal Kanika K Ahuja said the college decided to cancel classes after learning about the incident and had also asked faculty mentors and the college counsellor to remain available to students who may require support.

“After we got to know about the unfortunate incident, we cancelled classes. The safety, security and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us. We have requested our faculty mentors and college counsellor to remain available for any support students may require,” Ahuja said.

The college subsequently decided that classes Wednesday would be conducted online rather than on campus.

Located in south Delhi, LSR is around two kilometres from Aastha Kunj Park, and the alleged assault in the vicinity has renewed concerns over the safety of women and students travelling through public spaces in the area.

Three accused arrested

Police Tuesday arrested three men in connection with the case. Officials said one of the accused was injured following a brief exchange of fire with police during the operation.

The case involves a minor, and her identity is protected under law. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.

The college administration, meanwhile, has focused on precautionary measures and support for students following the incident. Its decision to temporarily move classes online came amid apprehension within the student community after details of the case emerged.
