IIT Delhi: 31-year-old MSc student dies after falling from sixth floor

A 31-year-old MSc Physics student died on Saturday morning inside the IIT Delhi campus after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of the lecture hall, police said.

The Kishangarh Police Station received information about the incident through the police control room at 8:33 am. A police team reached the campus and took the student to the campus hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police begin investigation

According to the initial police probe, the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 am. He then went to the lecture hall complex and took an elevator to the sixth floor.

Police said they have not found signs of ante-mortem injuries. A suicide note has also not been recovered from the scene.

A mobile phone was found in the student's pocket.

Counselling records examined

As part of the investigation, police have obtained the student's counselling records and other relevant information from the IIT Delhi administration.

The records and other details collected by investigators are expected to help establish the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The police investigation into the student's death is underway.

IIT Delhi mourns student's death

IIT Delhi expressed grief over the student's death and said it was extending support to his family.

"The Institute deeply mourns the tragic and untimely demise of an M.Sc. student on August 22, 2026. The Delhi Police are investigating the sad incident. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family. The Institute is providing all support to them," IIT Delhi said in a statement.
