Heavy rain cripples traffic, floods key roads across Delhi-NCR

Heavy rain lashed Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region on Friday, leaving several roads waterlogged and triggering long traffic snarls across the city during the evening rush hour. The downpour disrupted movement on several key stretches as commuters struggled through flooded roads, slow-moving traffic and reduced visibility. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of intense rainfall over parts of the capital, with weather alerts issued as monsoon activity strengthened over the region.

Waterlogging hits key roads

Several parts of Delhi witnessed water accumulation following the intense spell of rain. Vehicles were seen negotiating inundated stretches while traffic slowed considerably at multiple locations. Among the areas affected were stretches around the DND, Ring Road and Minto Road, where rainwater caused problems for motorists. Reports of waterlogging also emerged from other low-lying parts of the national capital. The situation worsened as the rain coincided with the evening peak traffic period, leaving office-goers caught in congestion on their way home.

Traffic snarls across city

Heavy congestion was reported on several arterial roads, with vehicles moving at a crawl at multiple points. The impact extended beyond Delhi, with traffic disruptions also reported in neighbouring Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. Videos and visuals circulating from the affected areas showed vehicles moving through heavily waterlogged roads as commuters faced delays. The rain added to the difficulties faced by residents after repeated spells of showers across Delhi-NCR over the past few days.

IMD sounds rain alert

The IMD issued weather warnings for Delhi as conditions remained favourable for further rainfall. Its forecast indicated widespread rain over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 7 and 8. The weather department's Delhi forecast also warned of intermittent rain, with some areas likely to receive light to moderate showers and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during the evening and night. The continued rainfall has increased the possibility of further waterlogging and disruption to road traffic, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas.

Rain disrupts Delhi-NCR

Neighbouring Gurugram has also been struggling with the impact of heavy rain. Roads and underpasses were flooded after intense showers, prompting authorities to advise private establishments to consider work-from-home arrangements to reduce traffic movement. The latest spell has once again highlighted the recurring problem of urban flooding across Delhi-NCR, where intense monsoon showers frequently overwhelm drainage systems and disrupt traffic. With more rain expected, commuters have been advised to remain cautious, account for possible delays and follow official weather and traffic advisories while travelling.
