Delhi Police registers 25 FIRs over anti-EC protests since October 2, Rahul & Priyanka Gandhi named

Congress demonstrations demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation have led to 25 FIRs in Delhi since October 2, with hundreds detained and later released

The Delhi Police has registered 25 FIRs in connection with protests against the Election Commission in the national capital since October 2, with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among those named in the cases, officials said.

The cases relate to alleged incidents of vandalism of public property, assaults and clashes involving police personnel, obstruction of government work and violations of prohibitory orders. According to the police, the FIRs had been registered by Thursday.

Officials alleged that some protesters had violated restrictions imposed in New Delhi district and disrupted public order during demonstrations over the past week.

Police cite prohibitory orders, clashes

Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is currently in force in New Delhi district. The provision allows authorities to impose preventive restrictions on assemblies and certain activities to maintain public order.

Police said alleged violations of these restrictions, along with reported damage to government property and confrontations with security personnel, prompted the registration of the cases.

"some demonstrators have taken the law into their own hands and disrupted public order", the police alleged.

The FIRs name several people, including Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, officials said.

Congress protests over electoral roll revision

The Congress has been holding demonstrations at several locations in Lutyens' Delhi since October 6, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protests are linked to allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has faced criticism from opposition parties over the exercise, while the demonstrations have drawn a police response in the capital.

Hundreds of protesters were detained during the demonstrations and released later, according to the report.

The registration of 25 FIRs marks the latest development in the ongoing confrontation over the protests. Police have cited alleged breaches of law and order, while the Congress demonstrations have centred on demands for accountability over the electoral roll revision process.
