Delhi Mercedes crash: 70-year-old woman killed, cop’s son held after fatal collision

A 70-year-old woman was killed in Delhi’s Narela on Saturday morning after a speeding Mercedes collided with a Wagon R, pushing the smaller vehicle into a three-wheeler loading van parked nearby.

The victim, identified as Urmila, was out for a morning walk when the accident took place outside Himalaya Apartments in Mamurpur around 8 am.

The Mercedes was being driven by Shubham, the son of a sub-inspector in the Haryana Police. Police arrested him from the spot following the crash.

Mercedes collides with Wagon R

According to the preliminary inquiry, the Mercedes collided head-on with the Wagon R. The impact sent the Wagon R backwards, where it struck a three-wheeler loading van parked some distance away.

Urmila became trapped between the three-wheeler and the Wagon R. She suffered serious injuries and died at the spot, officials said.

The driver of the Wagon R sustained minor injuries and was provided first aid.

Police await medical report

Eyewitnesses claimed that Shubham was drunk and driving the Mercedes at high speed when the crash occurred. Visuals from the scene showed him at the wheel of the luxury car after the accident.

A liquor bottle was also seen in the car’s cup holder.

According to police, the Mercedes belongs to a friend and Shubham had borrowed it for a trip a day earlier. Following his arrest, he was taken for a medical examination. Police are awaiting the report to establish whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officials said a case of death by negligence and other relevant sections is being registered. Urmila’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Fatal crashes involving luxury cars

The Narela crash comes amid other high-profile road accidents involving luxury vehicles.

In November last year, a speeding Mercedes allegedly rammed into three restaurant workers near Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj, killing one of them.

The 2024 Pune Porsche crash had also drawn widespread attention. In that case, a 17-year-old boy was accused of running over two software engineers who were riding a motorcycle.

The latest incident has again brought speeding and alleged drunk driving into focus as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Narela crash.
