Delhi LG Sandhu bats for 'walk-to-work' communities under new development policy

Delhi Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday emphasised that promoting high-density, mixed-use development around Metro and RRTS stations will pave the way for a future-ready Delhi.

Sandhu chaired a meeting with Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officials and discussed transit oriented development (TOD) policy to advance the concept of creating "Walk-to-Work" communities across Delhi.

"Guided by PM Narendra Modi's vision for a Viksit Bharat, this transformative policy will redefine Delhi's urban landscape and skyline," he said.

The lieutenant governor stressed that by promoting high-density, mixed-use development around Metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) stations, the government aims to reduce congestion, improve urban mobility, and expand access to affordable housing.

Developing vibrant, integrated station hubs where citizens can live, work, and shop without dependence on private vehicles will pave the way for a greener, more sustainable, and future-ready 'Viksit Dilli', he added.

The Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept has already been envisaged in the Master Plan of Delhi 2021.

The 'Regulations for Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and Charges, 2026' builds upon this vision to promote planned, sustainable, and transit-linked urban growth, particularly along metro corridors, thereby enhancing accessibility and enabling the creation of affordable housing stock.

Under the TOD policy, planned, high-density, and mixed-use development will be promoted within a 500-metre radius around the metro and RRTS corridors, covering approximately 207 square kilometres.
