Delhi govt imposes citywide ban on firecrackers to combat winter pollution, effective till Jan 1
With winter approaching and pollution levels expected to rise, the Delhi government on Monday imposed a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers across the city, effective immediately and lasting until January 1. The move aims to curb the severe air pollution that worsens in the winter months.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai made the announcement, urging the public to cooperate in the government's efforts to tackle air quality issues. In a tweet, Rai said, "In view of the increasing pollution in winter, a ban has been imposed on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers from today till January 1."
The ban applies to all types of firecrackers, including those sold online, and is part of a broader strategy to address the seasonal spike in pollution caused by factors such as stubble burning and reduced wind speeds. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued detailed instructions for the ban's enforcement, with the Delhi Police responsible for ensuring compliance.
To monitor the situation, the police are required to submit daily action reports to the DPCC, and authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against those who violate the order. The government has called on all residents to support the initiative, as air quality typically deteriorates during the colder months, impacting public health across the capital.
