BRICS rehearsal to hit traffic on over 35 Delhi roads, curbs from 9 am to 10 pm

Commuters across parts of the Capital are likely to face traffic disruptions Sunday as Delhi Police conducts a motorcade rehearsal ahead of the BRICS Summit, with restrictions and regulated movement planned on more than 35 roads between 9 am and 10 pm. The traffic police have advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time and preferably use public transport, particularly the Delhi Metro. Emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority passage during the rehearsal.

The affected stretches include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road, Motilal Nehru Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Marg. Traffic regulation is also expected on Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Kemal Ataturk Marg, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Josef Broz Tito Marg, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Bhairon Road, Feroz Shah Road, Bhagwan Das Road and Copernicus Marg, among other stretches.

Diversions in place

Diversions will be implemented at several points, including Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Panchkuian Road, Minto Road and Barakhamba Road. Commuters travelling from Tilak Marg towards Connaught Place have been advised to take Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Sikandra Road, while traffic movement on Mathura Road and Tilak Marg will be restricted during the rehearsal.

Commercial vehicles will not be permitted beyond the ITO crossing and have been advised to use IP Marg, DDU Marg and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. Traffic from Patel Chowk towards Sansad Marg will also be prohibited, though Ashoka Road will remain open.

Police have issued separate route recommendations for passengers travelling to railway stations and the airport. Those headed to New Delhi Railway Station have been advised to travel via ISBT Kashmere Gate, Boulevard Road, Rani Jhansi Marg and Panchkuian Road. Passengers going to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station can use the AIIMS-Ring Road-Ashram Chowk-Mathura Road route.

Airport-bound commuters have been advised to travel via Ring Road, AIIMS, Moti Bagh, Shankar Vihar Flyover, NH-48 and Mahipalpur Flyover.

Summit next week

The rehearsal is part of security and traffic preparations for the BRICS Summit, which India is hosting as the grouping’s chair this year.

The 18th BRICS Summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, bringing together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries as well as outreach invitees.

Delhi Police have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel through affected corridors and follow instructions issued by traffic personnel during motorcade movements.
