AAP leaders Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj detained during protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bharadwaj were detained on Monday while leading a protest march against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, amid heightened security across New Delhi.
The detention came as restrictions on demonstrations continued in the national capital, with authorities denying permission for protests in the area. The security measures have affected commuters, office-goers and others travelling through central Delhi.
Earlier on Monday, CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das visited Parliament Street police station to seek a fresh date for holding a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
Why New Delhi remains on high alert
The New Delhi district has witnessed heightened security in recent days because of its concentration of important government establishments, including Parliament, key government offices and the official residences of the President, Prime Minister, ministers and other prominent dignitaries.
Police face logistical and security challenges when large demonstrations are planned in the area, where access to several locations is restricted. Additional personnel, barricades and security cordons are typically deployed to prevent protesters from entering sensitive zones and to protect government buildings.
The district also houses New Delhi Railway Station, a major transport hub used by thousands of passengers travelling across the country. Road closures, traffic diversions and security restrictions can affect access to the station and disrupt movement in surrounding areas.
Metro commuters, office-goers face inconvenience
Central Delhi's extensive Metro connectivity makes it a key route for people travelling to work every day. Restrictions on station entry and exit during protests can cause overcrowding and inconvenience, particularly during peak hours.
Janpath Metro Station's Gate No. 2 is the closest to Jantar Mantar. Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat and Rajiv Chowk are also nearby.
When large demonstrations are expected, Delhi Police regulates vehicular movement, deploys additional personnel and places barricades at major junctions. These arrangements can lead to congestion on adjoining roads and delays for commuters.
The arrangements also require coordination among district police, traffic police and other security agencies to maintain public order and prevent unauthorised entry into restricted areas.
Earlier clashes highlighted security challenges
The clashes in the New Delhi district on July 20 highlighted the challenges authorities face in managing protests in the area. What began as a small gathering by the CJP escalated into a major law-and-order situation, prompting police action and an investigation into the violence.
With protests against Gyanesh Kumar continuing, security arrangements remain a key concern for police and commuters navigating the capital's central districts.
