2 DU law students arrested over alleged stalking of women in Delhi, third suspect absconding

Two Delhi University students were arrested on Friday over the alleged stalking and harassment of two women students in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, while a third accused, identified as Naman, remains absconding, police said.

The arrested students have been identified as Abhimanyu and Abhinav. All three accused are students of DU's Faculty of Law, deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Akanksha Yadav said.

The case relates to an incident around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, when the two women were near Hakikat Park. Police registered a case at Mukherjee Nagar police station under sections 78 (stalking), 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Women allege SUV followed them

In a video, one of the students said she and her friend were walking from Hakikat Park towards Old Gupta Colony when a white SUV approached them. The occupants allegedly rolled down the windows and made lewd comments.

According to a senior police officer, one of the youths told the woman, “Red suits you”. She objected and asked them not to misbehave, following which the men allegedly became aggressive and started abusing her.

The students later realised that the SUV was following them, the woman said in the video. When they stopped near Old Gupta Colony to record the vehicle, the SUV also stopped.

The occupants allegedly then tried to push the women inside the vehicle. The student's friend took out her phone, after which the SUV left, according to the complaint.

Police subsequently traced the vehicle to a parking area in Bhalswa Dairy in outer Delhi. The white SUV had at least 18 pending challans amounting to ₹33,000, sources said. Most of the challans were issued for speeding and using tinted glass.

Police had earlier said all three suspects were from Delhi University and identified Naman as the alleged driver of the white Tata Safari SUV.

Aastha Kunj case adds to concerns

The arrests come days after a separate case in which a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men at Delhi's Aastha Kunj Park.

The girl later led a Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) team to the locations where she was allegedly assaulted, helping investigators recover biological evidence, including a condom, police said.

According to a senior officer, the survivor told police that each of the three accused allegedly held a knife to her neck while raping her at different secluded locations inside the park. The FSL team subsequently examined the spots identified by her and collected samples for scientific examination.

The three men arrested in that case had allegedly posed as policemen before separating the girl from her male friend and taking her towards secluded areas of the park, according to the FIR and police accounts.
