PV Sindhu seals World Tour Finals berth, climbs to world No. 6 after Hylo Open triumph

Two-time Olympic medallist returns to the season-ending championship for the first time since 2021 after winning her second title of 2026

India's two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has qualified for the season-ending Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Finals following her title-winning performance at the Hylo Open in Germany, climbing to world No. 6 in the latest women's singles rankings.

The 31-year-old shuttler secured her place in the prestigious tournament after defeating Denmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt 21-12, 21-14 in the Hylo Open final on Sunday, claiming her second BWF World Tour title of the season.

The victory earned Sindhu 9,200 ranking points and propelled her two places up the world rankings, marking her highest position since December 2022.

The BWF World Tour Finals will be held in Hangzhou, China, from December 9 to 13, featuring the top eight eligible players and pairs across five disciplines.

Sindhu's qualification marks her return to the tournament for the first time since 2021, when she finished runner-up. Although she qualified for the 2022 edition, an injury prevented her from competing.

Sindhu's Hylo Open triumph capped an impressive campaign in Saarbrucken, where she won all five matches without dropping a game.

The former world champion entered the tournament as the second seed and produced a series of commanding performances before defeating compatriot Anmol Kharb 21-13, 21-16 in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Sindhu dominated eighth seed Kjaersfeldt, wrapping up the contest in just 39 minutes.

The victory came only a week after she finished runner-up at the French Open, where she lost to world No. 1 An Se-young of South Korea in three games.

Sindhu had earlier captured the Japan Open Super 750 title in July, defeating three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in the final.

The Japan Open victory was her first individual title since December 2024, while the Hylo Open success made 2026 her first season with multiple BWF World Tour titles since 2022.

Sindhu's recent performances have strengthened her position among the leading women's singles players.

Apart from winning the Japan Open and Hylo Open, she reached the French Open final and advanced to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open and Australian Open.

Her improved results have lifted her to sixth in the world rankings with 74,421 points.

In the separate BWF World Tour qualification standings, Sindhu occupies fifth position with 81,060 points.

The World Tour Finals qualification system considers performances in eligible tournaments during the calendar season, unlike the regular world rankings, which are calculated over a rolling 52-week period.

Sindhu is among five women's singles players who have already secured qualification for the season-ending competition.

The other confirmed participants include South Korea's An Se-young, Japan's Akane Yamaguchi and China's Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yu Fei.

Three places remain available in the eight-player field, with the qualification race continuing until November 24.

The upcoming tournament will mark Sindhu's sixth appearance at the BWF World Tour Finals.

She created history in 2018 by becoming the first Indian to win the women's singles title at the competition, defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the final in Guangzhou.

Sindhu also finished runner-up at the 2017 World Superseries Finals and the 2021 BWF World Tour Finals.

Her qualification for the 2026 edition represents another significant milestone in a career that includes two Olympic medals and the 2019 World Championships gold medal.

Following her recent success, Sindhu emphasised the importance of managing her fitness and tournament schedule as she continues competing at the highest level.

"I'm happy that I've climbed into the top six now. I just feel that if you keep doing well, you automatically start winning and your ranking also comes up," Sindhu said.

The Indian shuttler said she remained confident about competing against younger opponents and returning to the highest levels of international badminton.

"Absolutely. Why not? If you take care of your body, definitely yes," she said when asked whether she could return to her previous dominant form.

Sindhu also highlighted the importance of making informed decisions about tournament participation and recovery.

The former world champion has decided to skip the Korea Open and Japan Masters to manage her workload and prepare for the season-ending championship.

With two titles and a runner-up finish this season, Sindhu will head to Hangzhou aiming to reclaim the World Tour Finals crown eight years after her historic triumph in 2018.
