India beat South Korea 2-0 to enter Asian Games women's hockey final

The Indian women's hockey team moved within one victory of ending a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold after defeating South Korea 2-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday. Ishika Chaudhary and captain Salima Tete scored in the second half to secure India's place in the final against defending champions China.

India dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities but struggled to break through South Korea's disciplined defence during the opening two quarters. The victory assured India of at least a silver medal and gave the team an opportunity to claim its second Asian Games women's hockey gold after its historic triumph at the 1982 New Delhi Games.

India dominate early

India began aggressively and earned their first penalty corner in the second minute, but Deepika's drag flick was saved by South Korean goalkeeper Seoyeon Lee. Another penalty corner followed shortly afterwards, although India failed to convert the opportunity.

South Korea's goalkeeper produced another important save in the 13th minute, denying Rutuja Dadaso Pisal following a long ball into the circle. India continued to press forward and earned three more penalty corners early in the second quarter, but the Korean defence remained resolute.

India secured their sixth penalty corner in the 21st minute, only for an inaccurate injection to disrupt the attempt. Two further penalty corners towards the end of the first half also went unconverted, leaving the match goalless at the interval.

Ishika breaks deadlock

India maintained their attacking pressure after the change of ends, repeatedly entering the South Korean circle without finding an immediate breakthrough. Their persistence finally paid off in the 44th minute when Ishika converted a penalty corner through a well-executed variation involving Deepika.

The goal gave India a 1-0 advantage heading into the final quarter and forced South Korea to adopt a more attacking approach. India capitalised on the change in momentum and doubled their advantage four minutes later.

Captain Salima Tete produced an impressive run down the right flank before sending the ball into the scoring circle. Her attacking move resulted in India's second goal, putting the team firmly in control of the semifinal.

Defence holds firm

India continued to create opportunities and earned two consecutive penalty corners in the 57th minute, but South Korea's goalkeeper denied Deepika on both occasions. Despite their attacking dominance, the Indian players were unable to extend their advantage.

South Korea mounted a late challenge and secured four successive penalty corners in the closing stages. However, India's defence held firm to preserve the clean sheet and complete a convincing 2-0 victory.

China await in final

India will face defending champions China in the gold medal match on October 2. China advanced to the final after defeating hosts Japan 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time.

India entered the semifinals after winning all five pool-stage matches, scoring 66 goals while conceding just three. The team defeated Uzbekistan 19-0, Indonesia 17-1, Thailand 20-1, Japan 3-1 and Singapore 7-0 during an impressive preliminary campaign.

India's only previous Asian Games women's hockey gold came in 1982, when New Delhi hosted the continental competition. A victory over China would end the country's 44-year wait for another gold medal in the event and secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
