Gauff crushes Jovic, Rybakina sweeps aside Osaka to storm into US Open quarterfinals

Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina powered into the US Open quarterfinals with commanding straight-sets victories, strengthening their respective title challenges at Flushing Meadows. Gauff overwhelmed fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes, reaching the last eight in New York for the first time in three years and booking the 12th Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance of her career. The American has now won 20 consecutive sets, having last surrendered one against Liudmila Samsonova in Cincinnati. She will next face French Open champion Mirra Andreeva, against whom she holds an unbeaten record. Their quarterfinal will, however, present a fresh test as Gauff acknowledged that their previous meetings have consistently been demanding.

Rybakina dismantles Osaka

Rybakina was equally emphatic, brushing aside two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals in New York for the first time. The result means the Kazakh has now reached at least the last eight at all four Grand Slam tournaments. Rybakina struck 29 winners and seven aces against Osaka while committing only 17 unforced errors, continuing a dominant run in which she has conceded just 25 games across her opening four matches.

The second seed will meet China's Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinals after Zheng eliminated Iga Swiatek in straight sets. Rybakina is also closing in on another major prize beyond the US Open trophy — the world No. 1 ranking — with her run in New York putting her within one victory of reaching the top spot for the first time.
