Yamal’s double powers Spain past Croatia, extends unbeaten run to record 40 matches

Lamine Yamal scored twice and provided an assist as Spain defeated Croatia 4-1 in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, extending their unbeaten run to a record 40 international matches. The reigning European and world champions maintained their perfect start to the competition with a commanding performance at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium.

Spain, who had defeated England 3-2 at Wembley in their opening Nations League fixture, registered their second consecutive victory in Group A3. The result extended their record unbeaten sequence, which had already surpassed Italy’s previous mark of 37 matches.

Yamal strikes early

Spain made a flying start as Yamal opened the scoring in the second minute. Alex Baena delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Fermín López cleverly allowed it to pass through before Yamal curled a low shot beyond Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković.

Croatia recovered from the early setback and equalised in the 28th minute through Dion Drena Beljo. Ivan Perišić supplied the cross, allowing Beljo to score his first international goal with a well-directed header. However, Spain needed only three minutes to restore their advantage. Yamal turned provider, delivering an accurate cross from the right flank that Marc Pubill headed into the net for his maiden international goal.

Spain tighten grip

The hosts entered half-time with a 2-1 advantage after dominating much of the opening period. Croatia offered greater resistance after the interval, but Spain continued to create opportunities through their attacking movement. Yamal effectively settled the contest in the 63rd minute when he collected Pedri’s pass inside the penalty area and fired home from a tight angle. It was his second goal of the evening and Spain’s third, putting the result beyond Croatia’s reach. Substitute Nico Williams completed the scoring in the closing stages with a powerful finish, sealing a comprehensive victory for Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Historic unbeaten run

The victory extended Spain’s unbeaten sequence to 40 international matches, setting a new benchmark in international football. Their previous defeat came against Colombia in a friendly in March 2024. Since then, Spain have won the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, maintaining their impressive form across major tournaments and international fixtures. The match was also Spain’s first home appearance since winning the World Cup in July. Captain Rodri presented the trophy to supporters before kick-off, adding to the celebrations in Seville.

Next challenge awaits

Spain will look to extend their unbeaten sequence when they face the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3. The victory over Croatia leaves them with six points from their opening two Nations League matches. De la Fuente’s side will enter their next fixture following successive victories over England and Croatia, with Yamal continuing to play a central role in Spain’s attack.
